Tired of watching reality TV and talent shows on television each night? Video games and tournaments are posed to be the big thing to hit the airwaves. Imagine watching fellow gamers compete as they play Guitar Hero II or Fight Night Round 3. Its coming!
South Korea loves video games and has several television networks dedicated strictly to video gaming. In the United States, CBS recently aired the World Series of Video Games where contestants competed. The broadcast was presented much as a sporting event with a few technical additions such as on-screen health meters and text boxes explaining some of the games terminologies.
This broadcast isnt the first dedicated to video games. For example, several small networks (G4 and GamePlay HD to drop names) specialize in covering the world of video games and a few cable networks have covered video game tournaments. Many shows review video games and examine the latest game consoles. But the CBS broadcast is noteworthy as a first attempt to make watching video games on television a mainstream event. CBS has plans for airing at least two programs covering video games in the next year.
Watching a video game on television is a different experience than plopping in front of your favorite console and playing it. It will be interesting to see how gamers take to it. Will they tune in or tune out?
Broadcasters understand that viewers will expect more than simply viewing someone playing their favorite video games. With that in mind, CBS added a few elements to enhance the show. For example, they added a showmanship element to the scoring feature for contestants playing Guitar Hero II. This added element adds to the competition and gives the crowd something to cheer for.
Will this trend make its way to the UK?
